How a timber warehouse in Baden-Württemberg became a solar and storage pioneer

Customer needs

Holz-Kunz GmbH, a timber and building materials company based in Ubstadt-Weiher in the Karlsruhe district, needed to significantly reduce its energy costs across its warehouse operations. With a large roof available and high on-site electricity consumption, a large-scale rooftop solar system combined with battery storage represented the most economically and environmentally compelling solution.

Our tailored solutions

Wirsol, Wewise local expert in Germany, installed a 250 kWp rooftop PV system across 1,512 m² of warehouse roof, comprising 930 modules, and paired it with a 134 kWh battery storage system — at the time of commissioning, the largest installation of its kind under Baden-Württemberg's grid-supportive PV battery storage funding programme.

The combined system covers the majority of Holz-Kunz's electricity needs on-site, generating substantial energy cost savings year-round. The battery storage maximises self-consumption by capturing excess solar production and releasing it when needed, further reducing grid dependency for this established timber business in the Rhine-Neckar region.
